SIS Portal
Frontend modernisation of the Statistical Information System (SIS) at the Swiss Federal Statistical Office: the central platform for surveys, data validation and metadata, rebuilt around architecture, migration, accessibility and long-lasting standards.

Context
The Statistical Information System (SIS) is the internal platform the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) uses to produce Switzerland's official statistics. It covers the full lifecycle: managing surveys of cantons, municipalities, businesses and the population, validating and checking the data, and releasing it for publication on data.bfs.admin.ch and opendata.swiss.
SIS is a core part of the SIS 2.0 modernisation and the National Data Management programme (NaDB). The guiding idea: clean up your own house first. Instead of separate tools for each department, all surveys now run on one shared platform with common standards. SIS harmonises the data internally, while the I14Y interoperability platform makes sure authorities speak the same data language.
Starting point
- A grown frontend platform with technical debt
- Many departments and data stewards with different needs
- Rising accessibility requirements across the federal administration
- Several teams building on the same platform at the same time
- Live production that could not be interrupted
My contribution
- Frontend architecture: a clear application structure so several teams can ship independently and consistently
- Migration: step-by-step move to current Angular versions including server-side rendering, without a big-bang release
- Design system: a component library in Storybook as a shared foundation for all teams
- Accessibility: accessibility built into the definition of done instead of fixed afterwards
- Operations: deployment and operation on OpenShift within federal infrastructure
Outcome
A maintainable, future-proof platform with clear standards. New surveys and features ship faster and more safely, the interface is consistent and accessible, and teams work on a shared technical foundation. The frontend directly supports the NaDB goal of using data more efficiently and sparing people and businesses from answering the same questions twice.
